Photoroom vs Photogen — which is right for your CPG brand?

Photoroom vs Photogen

If you're running a CPG or DTC brand and you ship a lot of product photos, you've probably heard of Photoroom. They've been the go-to "remove the background, put a clean backdrop" tool since before AI image generation was a thing. Photogen is the tool we built for the same customer — solo CPG marketers who need campaign-ready creative, not just a background-removed PNG.

This isn't a hit piece on Photoroom. It's a straight comparison so you can pick the right tool for the job.

What Photoroom does well

What Photogen does well

When to use which

| Task | Photoroom | Photogen |

|---|---|---|

| Cut out a background for a product page | ✅ Perfect fit | Overkill — costs more and the result is the same |

| Hero shot on a clean studio background | ✅ Mature, fast | ✅ Also good — uses real product compositing |

| Five lifestyle scenes in different contexts | ❌ Not really its thing | ✅ Built for this |

| Amazon main image (white BG, 1:1) | ✅ | ✅ via the Amazon main image · Coffee template |

| Pinterest pin (9:16) | ✅ | ✅ via the Pinterest pin · Skincare template |

| Email header (16:9) | ✅ | ✅ via the Email header · Launch template |

| TikTok thumbnail (9:16) | ✅ | ✅ via the TikTok thumbnail template |

| Make a small change to an existing photo (e.g. change background) | ✅ Strong | ❌ Weak — Photogen generates from scratch |

| Pre-built brand assets for a team | ✅ Strong (with paid team plan) | ❌ Coming in 2026 |

What both tools get wrong

The short version

If you mostly need clean cutouts and product-page PNGs, Photoroom is great. If you need lifestyle scenes and ad creative at scale, Photogen is the better fit. A lot of brands we talk to use both — Photoroom for the product page, Photogen for the launch campaign.
